Chapter 22: The Iron Fist Breaks

Hong came across the marble.

Ja-heon had one heartbeat to bring his sword up, and Hong's blade hit it so hard that his arm went numb to the shoulder.

Hong was not pulling anything.

He had fought Ja-heon in a yard for show and in a valley with half a heart.

Now he came with his whole weight and eleven years of the Chief's training.

Ja-heon gave ground.

He gave more.

The hall exploded around them, steel on steel, the Iron Bow cutting in from the doors and the sects' own guards rushing to meet them.

Hong forced Ja-heon back against a pillar, and their crossed swords shook between their faces.

"Why?" Ja-heon said through his teeth.

"I had to know," Hong said.

His eyes were wet.

"Which arrows killed the girl?"

"Grey goose feathers, black thread.

"Your riders."

"I know."

Hong wrenched away and drove at him again.

"The Chief told me in his tent, the night before the valley, that she was a Cult kitchen thief.

"That she fell in a robbery.

"I believed him.

"I believed him for eleven years."

He struck, and Ja-heon took the blow on the flat of his blade, and the clang rang in his bones.

"Fight me," Hong roared.

"Fight me properly, because if I stop now I do not know if I can start again."
