Chapter 18: The Letter

Eskil's POV

The ring of wolves around the Longhouse lifted on the eighth night.

I watched them go from the window of my rooms.

Trucks backed out one by one along the gravel with their headlights sweeping the snow.

Reino wanted us rested and bruised and frightened at the Stone, not bloody in our own yard.

He had made his point.

The Moot was at dawn.

I sat at the desk, with the lamp turned low and a sheet of the pack's cream paper in front of me, and wrote.

I wrote it three times.

Each draft was shorter than the last.

At the end it said only:

I, Eskil Lehto, resign the seat of Ironwood and give it to the Elder Aino Lehto as regent until the pack chooses.

I ask that no wolf be harmed, and that Maija Hakala not be asked to speak at the Stone.

I signed it, and sat looking at the ink.

If I stepped down before the Moot, Reino's lever was gone.

There would be no Alpha to prove or disprove.

There would be only the Accord, and Tamarack's oversight of a pack that had lost its leader, which is exactly what Reino wanted.
