Chapter 19: The Black Notebook

Two weeks later, the doctor turned the screen toward them and said the placenta had moved.

"Out of the way, where it belongs," she said. "You can lift a kettle. You can climb stairs. You can do whatever else a woman does at thirty-one weeks."

She did not look at Jonas when she said the last part, which was how Wren knew she meant it.

"Thank you," Wren said, very politely.

Beside the bed, Jonas stared at the picture of the baby's profile.

"That's a nose," he said.

"That's your nose," the doctor said. "I'm sorry."

Wren laughed for the first time in two weeks.

Afterward, he drove her home to the flat above Daley's.

The baker had let her have it during her rest, for a rent she had argued about and lost.

He carried her bag up the stairs and put it on the kitchen table.

Then he stood in the doorway with his hand inside his coat.

"I need to show you something," he said. "It isn't money. I checked."

"Is it paper?"

"It's a notebook."

He took it out and set it beside her bag.

It was black and cheap, the kind sold at a pharmacy. The cover was soft at the corners from being carried.

Wren opened it.

The first page was dated three years back. In his small, upright handwriting it said, First Sunday. Lemon cake. She asked if I was the plumber.

The second page said, She says Wren hums when she cooks and doesn't know it.
