Chapter 15: Nobody Knocks
Neil didn't turn around.
He stood with his back against the glass and his eyes shut, and his sister's voice came through it right behind his head.
"Neilly, please. I don't know how I got out here. My feet are freezing."
I kept my hands on the desk.
"Don't look at her," I said.
"I'm not."
The party was still going in the ballroom, but people had started drifting into the lobby with their drinks.
Somebody saw the girl at the glass and stopped laughing.
Then the guests who'd gone up to bed came out onto the landing in their robes, because she'd started to knock.
In ten minutes there were twenty people on the stairs and around the lobby fire, and every one of them was looking at me.
"Open the door," a man from town said. "That's the Garrahan girl."
"She's not," I said. "Look at her left hand."
Erin had her left hand up on the glass, and a pen-callus showed on the side of the middle finger.
"She writes with that hand," I said. "Erin Garrahan was right-handed her whole life. Her brother will tell you."
