Chapter 11: The White Hall
In the Cult, mourning is done in white and in public.
Ye-han knelt on a mat of bleached hemp at the Alliance's front gate from dawn until noon.
He wore a plain white robe with his hair unbound, and four hundred sect masters filed past to look at him.
Nobody spoke.
He kept his eyes on the road north.
It was the most acting he had ever done, and he was not acting.
Chun-sik stood behind him with a bowl of water.
His eyes were swollen.
Ye-han thought he was grieving the old Lord, and he was touched.
At noon the Hall Elder stepped out from the line.
He wore a black coat over his blue, and a look of grave sorrow.
"The Lord of the Cult is dead," he said, loudly.
"His heir kneels at our gate, unguarded, in the heart of the Alliance.
"I ask the elders what we are to think."
The sect masters stopped.
"This is the Cult's trick," the Hall Elder went on.
"The old Lord dies, and the regent summons the heir home.
"If the heir leaves, the Cult has a new Lord to wage war with.
"If he stays, we have a Cult prince inside our walls with his grief to excuse him."
He turned to Gyeong-wook.
"The Young Lord should be confined, Leader.
"For the peace."
Gyeong-wook did not move.
He stood a few paces off in plain grey with the sun on the scar on his lip.
"No," he said.
"The Law of the Seat..."
"Does not apply to my husband.
"Under the Nine Seals the Young Lord is a guest of this Hall.
