Chapter 33: The Guest Cottage
We stayed in Prescott because Hazel was in Prescott.
I wasn't going to drive a sleeping baby down a mountain at ten at night to prove a point.
Dorothea had offered the guest cottage behind the main house, and she'd offered it kindly, with fresh towels and a pot of tea.
"The roads are dark," she'd said. "And I'd like to wake up with her under my roof."
I'd said we'd take the cottage.
I hadn't said we'd sleep.
It was one room with an iron bed, a cedar chest, and a window over a dark orchard.
The walls were thin enough that I could hear the main house's furnace kick on.
Hazel slept in her bassinet at the foot of the bed, and the monitor lay on my pillow.
Abram sat on the edge of the mattress with his elbows on his knees.
Breck stood at the window, staring at the lit kitchen across the yard.
Rand sat in the cedar chest's one chair and took his glasses off.
"She isn't a retired volunteer with a casserole," I said.
Nobody argued.
"She's got a lawyer who drafts petitions in two days. She's got a friend at the Department. She knew the exact day to arrive."
