Chapter 14: Midsummer Council
The throne hall of Orlen was fuller than on my wedding day, and nobody pretended to be kind.
Garrick stood in the middle of the floor in his plain dark coat, with two guards behind him and the hall's whole cold weight on his back.
I stood three paces to his left, because the guards would not let me closer.
My father sat on the throne in his furs, grey-faced, and would not meet my eyes.
Darian stood at the foot of the dais with a scroll in his hand and a smile he had clearly practiced in a mirror.
"My lords," he said. "We are gathered on a sad errand."
"Five years ago, Ser Garrick Marsden burned the lands of Greywold without leave of the Crown."
"He burned barns, mills and forests, and he left four hundred of the King's subjects homeless."
A murmur ran through the hall.
"The Crown has been merciful," Darian said. "We let him keep his title. We let him marry into our house."
