I got to the school gate at ten to three, out of breath, in a borrowed cardigan.
Odette was nowhere in sight.
Later I learned that the woman from table four had stopped her at the club steps with six friends and a lot of questions.
Posy came out of the double doors with her backpack bigger than her torso.
She saw me, and for the first time she ran.
"You're early," she said into my stomach.
"I am. Uncle Valen wants to show you something at the boathouse."
"Is Daddy coming?"
"Daddy is already there."
She took my hand and did not ask anything else.
Valen was sitting on the floor of the flat when we came in, with his back against the bed and his knees up.
Conrad had pulled a chair to the far wall.
