Chapter 9: Midnight Session

By ten o'clock in Miami, Bev had turned the back lounge of the bus into a studio.

She had hung moving blankets on the walls and stood a condenser mic on a cushion.

She'd borrowed a laptop the size of a suitcase from the truck.

"It's not much," she said. "It'll do."

"It's beautiful," I said.

"It's duct tape."

"It's beautiful duct tape."

Dougie sat on the couch tuning an acoustic guitar with his tongue between his teeth.

"I've written eleven songs in my life," he said, "and ten were about my ex-wife's cat. What's the song, Yuna?"

I didn't have a title.

I'd had the first line in my head for nine months.

It came to me on the first night in the Well, when the lights went down and I was the only person who knew whose voice it was.

I stood at the mic with my hands shaking.

In fourteen months I had never sung a word that belonged to me.

"Roll," I said.

Bev's voice came through the talkback, dry as a cracker.

"Rolling, Miss Kwon."

I sang the first line, and my voice cracked.

"That's good," Bev said. "Keep it."

I sang the second, and the third, and then I wasn't thinking at all.

I sang about a girl in a closet, singing a man's name to a crowd that never learned hers.
