Chapter 21: Her Father's Pack
"Take your time," the old elder said. "We'll hear Garrick first."
They had carried him to the foot of the Stone.
He sat on the frozen ground with his hands loose in his lap, and for the first time since the hot spring he didn't try to charm anyone.
The elders of Ashfall stood in a half circle around him.
Joss stood at the end of it, holding the silver knife, wrapped in cloth.
"Garrick Thornwell," the old elder said. "You took a Luna's strength for three years and told the pack she was wolfless. You let her be shamed in front of your warriors. You burned a border post with a boy inside it."
"I didn't know about the boy," Garrick said.
"You wrote the order."
"I was drunk."
"That isn't a defense," the elder said. "It's a second charge."
Garrick lowered his head.
Hester, at the edge of the ring, folded her arms and made a small, satisfied sound.
"Death is the old law," the elder said. "The pack would be within its right. But the Luna has the first word."
They all turned to me.
I stood with my arm bandaged to the shoulder and Bram a step behind me.
I looked at Garrick for a long time.
He did not look like the man who had held my wrist.
He looked like someone I had once known and forgotten the name of.
"I won't kill him," I said. "I already told you that."
"Then what?"
"Exile. Off Ashfall land, and Blackwater's, and every pack on this river. He walks out with what he can carry. No ring, no name, no rank."
Garrick's head came up.
"You're sending me out there with no wolf," he said, hoarse. "Cora, I won't last a winter."
