Chapter 12: Terms Broken
My father took one look at the two of us and said, "Jo, I need help carrying something heavy to the diner."
"There's nothing heavy," Jo said.
"There will be."
He took her by the elbow, and the bell rang behind them, and the shop was empty.
Nathaniel stood just inside the door with the sun on his shoulders.
I locked it and turned the sign to CLOSED.
"Start from the beginning," I said. "Slowly."
He told me about the investigator, the lawyer's folder, the hotel room, and the contract with a blank where a father's name belonged.
He told it plainly, without trying to make himself look better.
"Two hundred thousand dollars," I said when he finished. "For one sentence."
"Yes."
"And Margaret has booked a hall."
"For a press lunch at noon. She'll say that I have known the girl for years and have been quietly supporting her, that I married you to give the child a respectable uncle's name, and that you were part of a family arrangement."
"A family arrangement."
"She'll say it kindly."
The anger rose in me hot and clean.
It was not at him.
"Why come to me?" I asked. "You could have walked into that lunch and shouted."
"Because you were right this morning." He did not move from the door. "I knew about Preston in March. I let you walk toward it, and then I wrote to you, and I called it a gift. I'm not going to hide a second thing from you and call it protection."
I looked at him for a long time.
The shop smelled of rope and cut wood and the cold metal of keys.
"You wanted to watch it fail on him," I said. "That's what you told me."
"Yes."
"Say what you want now."
He took two steps into the room.
