Chapter 17: Eight Million
I went after him in my socks.
Four flights of Dell's stairs, the last one two at a time.
I caught him on the stoop with his hand on the iron rail.
"Colm."
He stopped.
He didn't turn around right away.
"You don't get to do that," I said. "Drop eight million dollars on my sister's floor and walk away."
He turned.
"I didn't drop it. I set it down."
"Colm."
"I'm sorry," he said. "That was a joke. I don't know how to do this part."
"Which part?"
"The part where you're angry and I'm not allowed to fix it."
I stood two steps above him in my socks, so our eyes were level, the way they'd been on the back stair.
"I'm keeping the notebook," I said.
"Good."
"Not you. The notebook."
"I know."
"Why did you do it?" I said. "The truth. Not the noble version."
He looked down the street toward Ninth Avenue.
"Because I went back up to 2001 after you quit," he said, "and I sat at the desk where you found me."
"And I tried to imagine closing on the fifteenth. Shaking hands. Flying back to London. Knowing every time I heard the word Kinsella that I'd sold your name for eighty million dollars."
