Jarek Sobel stood in the alley behind the Beaumont at a quarter to nine and did not go in.
The tuxedo was rented, and a size too tight across the shoulders.
The bow tie was the third he had tried.
He had stood here for twenty minutes with his back against a brick wall.
He watched the service door and the black cars lining up at the front.
Four of Tindle's men stood at the main entrance with a photograph of him.
He had seen it from the corner.
It was a still from the video of the Tower steps, with his face circled in red.
If he walked up those marble stairs, he would be on the pavement in handcuffs within minutes.
And Averett would be standing at a microphone watching it happen.
That was the thing he could not get past.
The whole point of tonight was Averett.
His voice, his words, eight hundred people looking at one man telling the truth.
A scuffle at the door would swallow it whole.
