Chapter 18: Squad Leader
By the second week of plebe summer I had learned three things.
The first was that a plebe was never allowed to walk, only to double-time.
The second was that a plebe answered every question with one of four sentences.
The third was that Cavan Voight hated me.
He did it quietly and thoroughly.
He was my squad leader.
The squad had twelve plebes, ten men and two women, and he ran us at six every morning on the seawall road in the wet heat.
Ten of us would be allowed to stop at the water fountain.
The women would be told to run another mile.
"Women are guests here," Voight said at the head of the formation, pacing, with his hands behind his back. "This place was built for men. Those who think otherwise can go home."
Nobody answered.
The redhead beside me stared straight ahead with a muscle jumping in her jaw.
"Do you disagree, Midshipman?"
