Chapter 17: Kitchen Light

"Anyone can fake a text," Simone said to the stairwell, to the crowd, to the glass.

She did it in the soft voice, with her chin up.

"A man with a buckle and a grudge. I'll see all of you at nine on Friday."

She walked past two hundred people and none of them stepped aside, so she walked around them.

Nobody clapped.

Somehow that was better.

At nine that night Rhoda put her hand on my cart and pushed it away from me.

"Go see the old man, kid," she said. "I'll cover forty-one."

"He's asked for you three times."

Amos sat in the brownstone's front room in his wheelchair, by a fire, with a plaid blanket and a very large cup of tea.

He looked at the ring-shaped pale stripe on my finger and said nothing for a good while.

"Did he apologize?" he said.

"On a desk. In front of two hundred people."

"That's a better apology than I ever got from his father."

He smiled, and it faded.

"I let that boy hide behind me because I wanted him to learn the cost of it," Amos said.

"I didn't know it would be yours."

"It's nobody's fault but his."

"And mine a little. I'm old. I'm allowed a little."
