On Saturday, February 13, Joelle came to dinner in a clean uniform, and Abuela fed her for an hour and then looked at the clock.

It was well past nine.

My grandmother had made ropa vieja, black beans, maduros and a flan, and she had put the biggest portion in front of Joelle without asking.

I had spent a week thinking about the Port.

On Monday I had given Baptiste the three things I knew, standing at the ventanita with my hands in flour.

The bill was on page 812, the Compact was on page 903, and Level 8 was 9,500 experience points away.

He wrote them on the legal pad and said his office would start a draft.

He did not ask me what a Compact was, because I did not know.

Neither of us said the word signature, but it sat on the counter between the croqueta tray and the napkins.

The week before the Port I had been thinking about the kitchen, and I still was.

I also had a misbelief that I had never said out loud.

I thought Joelle came for the food.

I thought she came for the woman who fed her.

I thought the rest was kindness she did not know how to turn off.

"More?" said Abuela.

"I'm full, Mrs. Quesada," said Joelle.

"You are not full," my grandmother said. "You are polite."

She took the plate anyway, and she carried it to the sink.

Then she wiped her hands on her apron, and she looked at Joelle for four seconds and at me for two.
