Chapter 12: Full Moon

The pin's point bit into my palm.

"I'll wear it," I said.

Freya blinked.

She'd wanted me to throw it at her.

I could see it on her face.

She'd wanted tears, or a slap, something for the eleven Alphas to carry home.

"I'll pin your braid myself," I said.

"I'll stand in the front row while you're marked. And when your father names his heir, I'll be the closest person in the room to him."

I put the pin in my pocket.

"You should've had it set in gold, Freya. Silver tarnishes."

For two weeks after that, I slept in Haakon's bed.

I never once asked him to break the custom.

He never once offered.

The night of the full moon, the great hall of Kingsfall was packed.

Wolves stood on the stairs and in the open doorways and out on the terrace in the cold, looking in.

Every pack on the shore had come.

Greyfir's wolves stood in a knot by the west wall, looking lost.

The hall's glass roof was black. The moon hadn't climbed high enough to reach it yet.

When it did, it would shine straight down on the stone circle in the middle of the floor where Rune and Freya would stand.

I stood at the edge of that circle in a plain gray dress with my hair loose, holding the silver pin.

Freya came down the stairs in white.

The whole hall sighed.

She was beautiful.

I'd never pretended otherwise.

She knelt in front of me on the stone, the way brides do, and bowed her head.

Her platinum hair hung down her back in one long thick braid.

Rune stood across the circle in a black shirt open at the throat.

His bandage was gone.

The pink half-healed punctures showed above his collar, and he'd left them open on purpose so everybody could see what Haakon had done.

He watched me.

He'd waited for this for a month. The Luna he'd thrown out, pinning his new bride.

I wound the end of Freya's braid up onto the crown of her head.

My hands were steady.
