Chapter 14: The Landlord Walks Through

I moved out on a Saturday, with a borrowed van and a stack of boxes.

Rhys carried most of them down the front steps, in a gray T-shirt with the sleeves pushed up.

I tried not to watch his forearms, and I failed every time he lifted one.

"You're staring," he said, not looking up.

"I'm supervising."

"Supervise the box with the books. It's heavy."

Taylor stood in the yard with her phone up and called it content.

I carried the last thing out myself.

It was Grandma's blue vase, wrapped in a towel, and I held it against my chest all the way to the van.

Delaney watched from the porch with her coffee.

She had been polite for a week, which in my sister meant she was waiting.

"You're really doing this," she said.

"The landlord's coming at eleven," I said. "I asked her to walk through with both of us."

"Why?"

"Because it's my name on the lease, and I'm done being the only one who answers for it."

She smiled into her cup.

A silver sedan pulled up to the curb at eleven exactly.

The woman who got out wore a lanyard and carried a clipboard, and she shook my hand first.

"Ms. Prentice. I got your letter."

"Thank you for coming," I said. "This is my sister, Delaney. She lives here too."

"Does she?" The woman looked at the clipboard. "I only have one name."

"I'm on the lease informally," Delaney said, bright and easy. "Hannah handles the money. I'd like to stay on when she leaves. Mom can sign for me."

"The lease runs through January," the woman said. "Ms. Prentice isn't renewing, and she has paid through November."
