He Sacrificed Our Son, But Won't Let Me Go novel · Chapter 9 of 32
Chapter 9: Vincent
Vincent Saraceno drove out of the cemetery with a split canvas bag on the seat beside him and sand running out of it onto the floor mat.
He had left Maura at her brother's door at three.
She had not said goodnight, and he had not asked her to.
On the stairs he had stood with his hand on the rail and watched her go up into the light, and he had thought of her at twenty-two.
Back then she had run at him every night, down the clinic steps, with her arms already open.
She had laughed when he complained about the bandages.
She had looked at every new wound with her eyes gone red, her hand an inch above it.
That was how he had known she was his.
He had thought of that every night for thirteen nights.
Now there was sand in his car.
He did not go home to sleep.
He drove to Dedham, up the long gravel drive, and let himself into the house with his own key.
His father's study light was on.
Carlo sat at the big desk in a grey silk dressing gown with a glass of milk at his elbow.
He did not look surprised.
"You went to the grave," Carlo said.
Vincent dropped the canvas bag on the blotter.
Sand spilled across a decade of papers.
"I opened it, Papa. It is full of sand."
"Yes."
He had expected a lie.
He had not expected the single word, spoken without a flicker.
"You put sand in my son's coffin."
"I put weight in a box so your wife would have something to bury." Carlo folded his hands. "The fire took him. There was nothing left. Do you want your wife to bury nothing? I spared her."
"You told the doctor to make it forty pounds before the fire department found anything."
"I knew what a fire like that does."
