Chapter 7: Two and Two

I didn't give her an answer.

I shut the door and locked it, and then I stood with my back against it until I heard the car pull away.

Blythe was pregnant.

Blythe in my dining room in her pale pink dress, touching her stomach.

I'd thought it was a habit.

I sat down on the stairs and counted backward.

Leo had been in New York for two days in January, for a board dinner.

He'd been in London most of December.

He'd been on my kitchen floor on December thirtieth.

I didn't know where he'd been any other night of the year.

I'd never asked, because it wasn't my business.

It was in the contract.

I called Libby.

She came over in her pajamas with a box of donuts and listened to the whole thing on my kitchen floor.

"She tore up nothing," Libby said when I was done. "You tore up ten million dollars."

"Yes."

"You threw ten million dollars into the ocean."

"Some of it landed on the lawn."

She stared at me.

Then she got up, went out the back door in her slippers and walked across the wet grass.

She came back with a soggy piece of check and held it up.

"I'm framing this."

I laughed so hard I had to hold my stomach.

Then I stopped laughing.

"Libby. What if it's true? About Blythe?"

She sat back down and picked up a donut.

"Then he's a pig and you're better off," she said. "And if it's not true, his mother's a liar who just drove six hours to scare a pregnant woman. Either way, you've got a park to win."

The city meeting was on the second Thursday of May.

There were three of us presenting.

A firm from Boston with a slideshow and matching jackets.
