Chapter 31: The Helipad
Nicholas was already out of the tent.
He didn't run.
He walked very fast across the dark grass, and I went after him with the microphone still in my hand.
Behind us chairs scraped, and four hundred guests came spilling out onto the lawn.
The grass around the pad lay flat under the rotor wash.
Russell had his hand on the door.
His lawyer was beside him, the heavy man with the Texas flag pin, one hand holding his hair down.
Then headlights came on at the edge of the lawn.
Two state police cars rolled out from behind the garage wing, where they must have been parked since dusk.
A dark sedan followed them.
The cars stopped across the grass between the helipad and the bluff.
A trooper walked straight to the pilot's window and held up his badge, then made a flat cutting motion with his hand.
The pilot looked at Russell.
Then he looked at the badge.
He reached up and flipped switches, and the rotor began to slow.
The sound wound down until I could hear the ocean again.
Two men in windbreakers got out of the dark sedan.
