Chapter 15: Second First Kiss

"I didn't come back because I was a coward," Micah said.

Ansel waited.

"They cut my badge access the week you failed review."

"Tristan said the project was closed and you were going to be reset, and I told myself it was already over."

His voice shook, and he let it.

"I could have stood outside the tower and shouted."

"I could have gone to Gordon."

"I sat in my apartment for more than a year and told myself you didn't know I was gone."

"I knew," Ansel said.

"I know. You told me."

"I don't remember telling you."

"You counted every day."

Ansel stood.

He came around the green table slowly, and Micah stayed in his chair and did not get up, because the rules said Ansel decided.

He stopped close enough that Micah had to tilt his head back.

"I heard forty nights of a man who couldn't stop talking," Ansel said.

"He was frightened and funny, and he told me things he told nobody else."

"Ansel."

"I don't remember him. I want to find out whether I'd have wanted him."

He put one hand on Micah's jaw.

His palm was warm, and his thumb rested at the corner of Micah's mouth.

"I'd like to kiss you," Ansel said. "On purpose. Knowing nothing."

"Yes."

"Say it plainly. It's the rule."

"Yes, Ansel. Please."

Ansel bent and kissed him.

It was slow at first, just a press of warm mouth, a question.
