Chapter 46: The Second Trial
"Do you want her to?" the agent asked me.
It was the first time anyone had asked.
I looked at Posy's face, and at the foot of paper with its purple tabs.
"Yes," I said. "I want it under oath, in front of Jacqueline. I want her to have to sit still for it."
In October, the federal courthouse in Pittsburgh held two trials in one week.
On Monday, a jury was picked for United States against Jacqueline Boutwell.
On Thursday, a judge would hear the second case alone.
Jacqueline had insisted on defending herself.
The judge had warned her twice, and the lawyer who sat beside her as backup looked as though he had a headache.
On Tuesday morning, Eleanor Varley walked to the witness stand in a gray cardigan, with her hair in a plain braid.
She did not look at the gallery.
Royce sat in the second row, with Kit beside him, and Eleanor looked at the jury, the judge, the flag and the water pitcher.
