Chapter 20: The Open Door
"Lucan's men," I said. "Not Rose's?"
"Her maid carried the purses. She gave them to a man in the Prince's grey livery at the barracks door." Edie's grip tightened. "The same man who ran out of the boathouse with a rope the night of the lake. I'd know his face anywhere."
"What else?"
"I got behind the water barrels. I heard the man talking to a sergeant." She shut her eyes to remember it right. "He said the tower door would be left open the night before. He said let her run, she'll go where she's expected to go."
My mouth went dry.
"And the cathedral doors are theirs," Edie said. "Every guard on them. And the Prince will do it himself, when the crown goes on her head, while everybody's watching her."
"Do what?"
Edie looked at me.
"He said it plain, my lady. He said the Emperor will be dead before the bells finish, and the villainess will be found with her own knife."
My knife.
The little silver one from my father, from my riding boot.
