"Then we get him down them," I said.
"He hasn't gone down them without that chair in two years. Nonno has the key to it. Nonno runs it."
"And going down on his own?"
"He tried once, the first year. He fell four steps."
She shifted Maddie higher on her shoulder.
"He says if he falls again, he stays up there for the rest of his life."
"Then somebody stands under him."
"Who?"
"Monday," I said.
Augusto went to the cemetery on Monday mornings, to his wife and his son.
At nine-thirty his car turned out of the street in Elmwood Park.
At nine-forty the cousins parked in front of his porch.
Rita let us in the side door.
Her brother was standing at the top of the stairs.
He was dressed already, in the navy trousers from the christening and a white shirt, his forearms in the gray cuffs of his canes.
The stair lift sat folded at the bottom, by my feet.
"Fourteen steps," he said.
"I counted them last time."
The bigger cousin took off his jacket and handed it to me.
He went up near the top of the stairs and turned around below the boy, his hands open.
