Chapter 27: Ansel's POV: The Vote

Ansel's POV

I stood on the porch for an hour after her truck was gone.

Then I put the stubs back in the drawer and drove to the big house.

Constance was in the dining room with the morning paper and a pot of tea.

She did not look up when I came in.

"Ansel," she said. "You're not supposed to be here."

"I'm here for the vote."

"There's no vote."

"The Landing needs one," I said. "My father wrote it into the bylaws in 1998. Nothing on the waterfront gets sold, mortgaged or built without ninety percent of the shares."

She turned a page.

"I have eighty," she said. "As you know."

"And I have twenty."

"For the moment."

I pulled out the chair across from her and sat down in it, in my uniform, with my hat on my knee.

I had not sat at that table since the night I walked out.

The room looked the same, polished and cold, with the portrait of my father above the sideboard.

"I read the loan," I said.
