Chapter 30: One Promise
It rained on the Wednesday I picked.
It started at dusk, a slow cold drizzle that ran off the porch roof in strings, and by the time Lou was asleep it had settled into a steady drumming on the tin.
Gabe sat on the porch swing with a blanket over his knees.
I came out with two mugs of coffee and sat beside him.
Beignet slept between our feet, snoring.
"Eight weeks," I said.
"Is that all?"
"Since the hospital."
"Feels like a year," Gabe said.
"It feels like five."
He didn't answer that.
The rain blew in a little under the eaves, and he moved the blanket to cover my lap too.
"There's one more thing," I said.
"All right."
"I've been carrying it around since the camp. I wanted to see if I could stand it, and I can't."
He set down his mug.
"Say it."
"Promise me you'll never decide for me again."
He went still.
"Even when it's to save my life," I said. "Even then. If a doctor comes out in a hallway and says the thing, and I'm on a table, and you can choose, you tell me. You ask me. You never make the choice in the dark."
