Chapter 12: The Leak
The photo hit the internet at 6:40 on Monday morning, while Nash was still brushing his teeth.
It was a long-lens shot, grainy, taken from a neighbor's dock a quarter mile down the shore.
Two men on a frozen pond at sunset.
One of them was lifting the other off the ice with both hands under his arms.
The other was laughing with his head thrown back, in a white jersey that said LACHAPELLE.
Nash looked at it for a long time with the toothbrush still in his mouth.
It was the happiest he had ever looked in a photograph.
He texted the number he had saved under "Cap."
NASH: Have you seen
LACHAPELLE: Yes.
LACHAPELLE: My agent has seen it. My mother has seen it. She called to say I look thin.
NASH: That's a lot of people for 6:40.
LACHAPELLE: I have lived my life in public. It is not a thing that bothers me.
LACHAPELLE: But you.
NASH: I'm fine.
LACHAPELLE: Nash.
NASH: I'm really fine. It's a good picture.
There was a long pause, and then:
LACHAPELLE: It is the best picture of me that exists.
Bernie Costigan called at seven.
