I Sent the Mafia Heir to Prison, and He Came Out Wanting Me novel · Chapter 21 of 24

Chapter 21: Midnight at the Lake

His father had always taken the best chair in any room, and tonight it was his grandmother's.

Dario watched the old man lower himself into the carved wooden seat beside the brick oven.

He did it with a small sigh.

The warehouse was lit by four oil lanterns on the floor.

They threw long shadows up the rafters and across the concrete, and the river smell came in under the roll-up door.

Ignazio stood at the old man's shoulder with his right arm in a white cast and a pistol in his left hand.

Two more men stood by the door.

Dario sat on an upturned flour crate in the middle of the floor, twenty feet from all of them.

He kept his hands on his knees.

Under his shirt, against his ribs, a strip of tape tugged at his skin.

Ben had put it there himself at ten o'clock.

He had pressed the little transmitter flat with his thumb, and then he had left his thumb there a second too long.

Neither of them had said anything about it.

A sealed van sat a quarter mile down the river road with the chief deputy in it.

Ben was in it too.

He had not been talked out of that, and it was the only argument Dario had ever lost with relief.

"You look well," Gaetano said. "Prison suited you. You're so much calmer than you used to be."

"Where do you want it, Papa?"

"Where's the baker?"
