Chapter 26: Courtship
Carmela stopped chewing.
"Ask him what?"
"What do you think?"
Then she slid off the counter, took out her phone and started typing with both thumbs.
"What are you doing?"
"Opening a pool."
She didn't look up.
"Who asks who, and when. I'm taking you, in September. Nonna's going to fight me for it."
On Monday at six in the morning somebody knocked on the clinic's back door.
I came down in my robe with the baseball bat.
There was nobody in the alley.
There was a wooden crate on the step.
Tomatoes, the good ones, still warm from a truck. A bunch of basil wrapped in wet newspaper. A paper bag of peaches.
On Tuesday it was zucchini flowers and a wedge of cheese.
On Wednesday, a loaf of Nonna's Saturday bread, which meant he'd gone to Holmes Street at five and asked her for it.
On Thursday I was waiting on the step at ten to six.
He came up the alley carrying the crate, saw me, and stopped.
"You're up," he said.
"You're delivering groceries to my back door like the milkman."
