Chapter 7: Dario's POV: Twelve Minutes Away
Dario's POV
I told the man from the Gaming Control Board that my wife had the flu.
He wrote it down without looking up.
"Monday at nine, Mr. Corvino," he said. "The board has received a complaint that the holder of record has not been seen on the property in nine months. If she does not appear in person, I am required to recommend suspension."
"She will be there."
"Then we'll see you both."
He left me standing at the front desk with his letter, and my hand wanted very badly to crush it.
I did not tell Callie the rest.
I had meant to tell her that night at the window, with the whole Strip burning under us.
I had meant to say it in the bank, in the safe room, anywhere.
I could not find the first word.
On our wedding day I did one thing for her that she still did not know about.
I had never told her, because Lowell said it would frighten her, and that a woman who knew would not be safe.
He said it kindly.
I believed him.
That silence is the whole of my crime, and I have had to look at it all day.
At ten that night, I went up to my office and turned on the cameras.
I told myself I wanted to see if Rocco's men were circling.
That was a lie.
I wanted to see her.
She was on the main floor, with a gray cart and a bucket and her hair tied back with a rubber band.
She had insisted on working.
She would not even take the soft chair I'd had put at the end of the bar.
