Chapter 22: The Arch

Kirsten's POV

We came up the bluff at ten past four.

It was the same bluff, with the same white chairs in the same rows, and the bay lay the same hard blue behind the arch.

Somebody had built the arch again, in beach roses, over the same patch of trampled grass.

A hundred and thirty people turned in their seats as we reached the end of the aisle.

I wore a plain gray linen dress and no veil, with my hair down.

Brennan walked on my left in a dark suit that belonged to him.

I had my hand through his arm, and his palm lay over my fingers, hot and steady.

Todd stood under the arch with a flute of champagne.

Shea stood beside him in a pale green dress, with a new ring flashing on her left hand.

I watched them see us.

Shea went white to the lips.

Todd's smile held, for the length of one breath, and then it began to slide.

"Kirsten," Shea said, across twenty feet of grass. "You came."

"I came for the slideshow."

A few people laughed, uncertainly.

To the right of the arch stood a white screen on two poles, and a folding table with a laptop on it.
