Chapter 16: What Corbin Sold

The doors banged behind Carys, and the noise in the hall came up all at once.

Two hundred people were talking.

I did not turn around to look at the door she had run through.

I turned to my brother.

Corbin stood where I had left him, in the aisle, with his hands hanging.

"What did you sell?" I said.

"Bri..."

"Say it here."

"Not in front of them."

"You signed your name in front of them," I said. "In that book. Next to the elders. Say it here."

He looked around the hall.

Every Hartwell wolf in the room was looking at him, and so was every Kingsley.

He had been loud and friendly his whole life.

He had never once been the one everyone was waiting on.

"Three years ago," Corbin said, and his voice came out small.

"Louder."

"Three years ago, the night you left." He cleared his throat. "Grandpa had put Mom's trust in your name. Her share of the lodge land. It was supposed to come to you when you turned twenty-six."

"I know what Mom left me."

"Rafe came to me that night. He said you were going to Europe for your health, and you'd be gone a long time, and you'd never come home to claim it."

"And you believed him."

"I was in debt, Bri."

A murmur ran down the benches.

"I'd borrowed from three men in Tacoma. I put up the lodge land without telling anyone. Rafe paid it off. All of it, in one night."

"And in return?"

"He asked for the trust." Corbin's eyes were wet. "I signed it over. I forged Grandpa's second signature, because the trust needed two. Rafe said it was only paperwork, because you'd never need it."
