Chapter 9: Frost Watch
The sprinklers ran all night on the first hard cold, and the whole marsh turned to glass.
I stood on the dike in the dark with a full thermos, watching the water arc over the beds and freeze where it landed.
Every vine wore an inch of ice.
The headlights of Ansel's truck lit it from the dike road, and the whole bed shone.
"It's the only way to save the berries," he had told me at dinner. "Water gives off heat when it freezes. We keep the ice coming and the fruit stays alive under it."
Now he sat in the cab with the engine running and the heater on, a clipboard on the dash.
I climbed in and shut the door.
"It's twenty-six degrees," Ansel said, without looking up. "You should be in bed."
"I'm off tonight."
"You should be in your bed, then."
He set the clipboard down.
"I brought coffee."
He looked at the thermos, and then at me.
"Eero tested it," I said. "I let him."
He laughed, a short, surprised breath, and took the cup I poured.
His fingers closed over mine on the handle and stayed.
I looked at his hand on mine for a long moment.
Then I took the cup out of it, set it on the dash, and climbed into his lap.
"Signe."
"You said you'd be here until four."
He did not look at the clock.
"I will be."
"Then we have time."
I straddled him, facing him, with my knees on the bench seat, and kissed him.
He tasted of coffee.
He made a rough sound and caught my face in both hands.
For a while there was only the heater, and the sprinklers ticking, and his mouth.
The windows began to fog.
"Your brothers," I said, against his lips.
"Kasper's asleep. Eero's in the pump house with a book. Soren's in town."
