Chapter 12: The Seal
Ja-heon was on his feet and into his coat before the second horn finished.
Seon-woo was already at the window with his sword in his hand and his hair loose down his bare back.
"Iron Bow," he said.
"On the north rim.
"They are coming down the stairs."
The valley had one road in and one stair cut into the rim.
Sixty grey riders were coming down it with torches in the thin gold light.
Ja-heon counted the bows, and the men on foot behind them, and stopped counting.
"They followed us," he said.
"No.
"We were not followed.
"I would have known."
Seon-woo's voice was cold with fury.
"Someone told them where to look."
Ja-heon thought of the black wagons, and the grain stamp, and the plain-coated driver who had passed them on the road without a glance.
He did not say it.
They ran.
Outside, the valley was a stirred hive.
Eighty fighters were coming out of the huts with scythes and hunting bows and the three real swords the valley owned.
Children screamed.
Women snatched them up.
Pyo stood on the veranda of his long house in his sleeping robe, with one hand on the rail.
"Lord, get inside!"
"Ja-heon, what is this?"
"It's the Alliance.
"They've come for the Crane."
"The Alliance," Pyo said, in a voice Ja-heon couldn't read.
"Of course.
"Of course they have."
A loud clear voice rolled down from the rim.
"Pavilion Master Yun!"
It was Hong Gang-mun.
He stood at the top of the stairs with his arms folded and his torn ear red in the sun.
