Chapter 9: The Wash Bay

Levi's POV

The rain was coming down so hard on the wash bay roof that I couldn't hear the hose.

It was three in the morning, and I'd just pulled a minivan out of a flooded underpass on Highway 77.

I'd hosed the mud off the rollback because Orlin would see it at six and say nothing about it for an hour.

Then she walked in out of the dark.

She had on my old gray sweatshirt, wet through at the shoulders, and her hair stuck to her neck.

She stood at the edge of the fluorescent light and looked at me with the hose in my hand.

"Driver," she said.

I turned the nozzle off.

I knew what she was, and I'll say it plainly, since nobody else in this town would.

She was a married woman, and I had seen the ring the first night, in the cup holder, catching the elevator light.

I'd seen it before she took it off.

I had known exactly what I was doing when I answered her.

I had done it anyway, and every day since then I'd called it help.

I knew she went to Hays on Thursdays.

I knew how many Thursdays I had left before she went back for good.

I kept track of them in the truck at night when I was alone.

I'd had nobody ask me for anything in three years, and she asked me for everything.

She asked in a flat, bare voice: use me, hit me, don't be nice.

She never asked me for anything small.

She never asked me to sit with her, or tell her my name was a good one, or hold her hand in the truck.

I wanted to give her the small things so bad that it scared me.

I didn't know how to do it without breaking her rules.
