Chapter 16: The Lake House
Preston's invitation came on thick cream paper, and it said the weekend was Gerald's idea.
"A family weekend at the lake house," Dex read aloud. "With the club board, the judge and the banker's wife."
"It's a trap," Roxy said.
"Obviously it's a trap," I said. "I'm going."
The lake house was two hours north, a cedar and glass thing with a dock, a boathouse and fourteen guests already on the porch.
Gerald met us at the top of the steps in a cashmere sweater, with his arms spread wide.
"Roxy," he said. "My girl."
She stood very straight and did not step into the hug.
"And Mr. Brannigan, the investor," he said, and he smiled with every tooth. "I hope you'll forgive an old man's pride."
"I forgive nothing," I said. "I came for dinner."
A long table had been set under the porch lights, with candles and silver and place cards.
Preston sat at Gerald's right, relaxed, with a drink at his elbow and no ring in sight.
The judge from the club was there, and the banker's wife, and a dozen faces I knew from the lawn.
