Chapter 12: Tacoma
He didn't argue.
He stepped back out of the reporters' lights and let me get in my truck.
In the mirror I watched him stand at the gate in the moonlight, barefoot in a black suit, until the lake road curved and took him away.
I drove to Tacoma in the blue dress.
I slept in it, on top of my own covers, in my own bed over the bike shop.
On Monday I went to work.
By Monday every human in Pierce County had seen the boathouse window.
The first patient of the shift was a man with chest pain in a recliner in Spanaway.
While I was putting the leads on him, his wife held up her phone and filmed me.
"Ma'am," my partner said. "Put that down or I'm putting it in your microwave."
She put it down.
The man with chest pain looked up at me from the recliner.
"Is he nice to you, at least?" he said.
"Sir, your heart rate is a hundred and forty."
"I'm just asking."
At noon my captain called me into his office and shut the door.
He looked miserable.
"There are news vans in our lot," he said. "Somebody called the county. Twice. The chief wants to know if you'd consider some leave. Paid. Till it dies down."
"No," I said.
"Teagan."
"I didn't do anything wrong on the clock. I didn't do anything wrong off it either. I'm not hiding in my apartment because a woman with a camera stood on a dock."
He rubbed his mustache.
"You're sure?"
"I'm on till eight tomorrow. Put me back on the board."
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he picked up a pen and crossed something out on his desk.
"Fine. But you're not talking to the vans."
"I wasn't going to."
When I came out of his office, Rupert Marchmont was sitting in our break room in a borrowed county jacket, eating a stale doughnut out of our box.
