Chapter 18: Shane's Turn
Shane Ostrow knocked on the duplex door at ten that night.
He wore a hooded sweatshirt with the hood up, and his right arm hung stiff and strapped against his side.
He held a brown folder in his left hand.
Tanner opened the door, looked at him, and did not say anything.
"I know," Shane said. "I know what I look like. Can I come in?"
Tanner stepped back.
They sat at the kitchen table, Shane across from Elliot, with the folder between them.
Tanner stayed on his feet by the stove, with his arms crossed over his sling.
"Rory said you'd know what the shot does," Shane said to Elliot. "I want it from you, not from him."
Elliot did not make him wait.
He unbuttoned the top of his shirt and pulled the collar aside.
The scar ran down over the collarbone and out across the shoulder, long and thick and pale.
Shane stared at it.
"Look at it," Elliot said.
"You were a starter," Shane said slowly. "You'd have gone pro."
