Chapter 18: Trunk Show

I sat back in my chair.

Two tables over, Aidan's needle stopped.

"Over your bed," I said.

"Her mother said it would help her feel at home." Evan laughed, and it wasn't a laugh. "I sleep on the couch. I wake up and he's looking at me from twenty-two directions."

For a second I felt sorry for him.

Then I remembered the coat-check line.

"That's yours to fix, Evan," I said. "Not mine."

I stood up.

He stood up too, because his mother had raised him to.

"Thursday," I said. "The nuisance filing."

"Thursday," he said.

On Thursday the filing was withdrawn.

Nobody told us why.

The court just sent a single page saying Thorncroft Properties no longer wished to proceed.

Shauna taped it to the front window under Aidan's parents and drew a smiley face on it in lipstick.

Evan came to every scan after that.

Every two weeks, he was in the lobby with a coffee he didn't drink.

He never once told his mother where he was going.

August went by in seed pearls.

Gran beaded the sleeves of my second dress every morning at her desk.
