Chapter 21: Runner

Connor came through the gap in the lobby doors at 11:40, so fast that Calvin nearly put him on the tile.

He had the little girl in his arms.

Her lips were blue, and the color over her was red, from her chest.

"She went red at nine," he said. "It looked at her and said, 'Red. Out.' A fighter carried her to the curb."

"Her mom's behind me. And him."

His friend came through the gap next, carrying his mother's bag, with his mother right behind him.

Then the woman with the shaved head, with her father over her shoulder.

Then the rest of them, fifty fighters from the Green, carrying the people off the Pratt Street curb in their arms.

They fought their way through the crabs in the street, and Calvin let them in one at a time.

"Her first," I said. "Skip the line."

Nobody on Gloria's clipboard argued that either.

I pulled the little girl's red into my own chest.

For a minute I couldn't breathe, the way she hadn't breathed right in days.
