Chapter 16: Osric's POV: Leave the Place Empty
Osric's POV
The elders had placed a crown on the empty chair beside mine.
It was too small to improve the arrangement.
Corwin had apparently decided a royal object might satisfy the custom.
The oldest elder looked from the crown to me.
"Is that your answer?" she asked.
"No," I said.
I took the crown off the cushion and set it on my own chair.
The elder waited for me to sit on it.
I moved it again before Bram could offer advice from the audience.
Ruby stood beside Deborah, with Sabine on her other side.
None of them approached the platform.
I was glad they hadn't made this easier for me.
I wished, very privately, that someone would.
Corwin stepped up beside the empty place.
"The seat may remain reserved until a willing candidate emerges," he said.
"No," I told him.
