Chapter 14: The Shoreline

I drove to Santa Monica at one in the morning and left the car in a lot with a closed gate.

I hadn't been near the ocean since July.

I had told myself it was a choice, and that I was busy.

The beach was empty and the tide was out, and the sand was cold and packed hard.

I walked down to the waterline in my coat and stood with my arms wrapped around myself.

It was loud.

I'd forgotten how loud the sea was at night.

I took off my shoes and left them on the sand, and I walked in.

The first wave hit my ankles and I flinched.

The second reached my knees, and my whole body locked.

I could feel the rope on my leg.

I could feel the dark pressing on my lungs, and I could see the light of the yacht shaking above me.

I stood there with my fists shut, and I didn't go back.

I didn't go forward either.

Behind me, sand crunched.

I didn't turn around.

"I told you not to follow me," I said.

"I know."

His voice was thirty feet back, steady, low.

"I was in the lot when you drove up. I'm not coming any closer. I'm just not leaving you alone with it."

"You don't get to decide that."

"No," Beck said. "I don't. If you tell me to go, I'll go. I won't come in after you. I'll stand right here where you can see me."

I looked over my shoulder.

He was a dark shape on the pale sand, hands open at his sides.

He hadn't moved forward a step.
