Chapter 9: The Ranking Duel
The arena was a square of packed earth in the middle of the academy yard, ringed with rope.
Three hundred students crowded around it under a thin white noon.
Tae-gang stood at the rope with his arms folded and his chest band under his shirt.
A new bite sat at his throat above his high collar.
He felt every inch of last night in his legs.
In the ring, Ju-an stood with a wooden sword in his right hand.
He had no spectacles.
His eyes were narrowed against the light, and his black hair was tied in a hard high knot.
He looked like a slim sheathed knife.
Across from him, Oh Chang-min rolled his shoulders, smiling.
His left wrist was wrapped in white cloth, and he held a wooden sword of his own.
"Scholar," Chang-min said. "Last chance to forfeit."
"No."
"Pity."
The instructor dropped a red flag.
Chang-min struck first.
He was fast and strong and very well trained, and the first three cuts drove Ju-an backward across the sand.
Ju-an gave ground.
He slid off each blow by a hair.
Those were the first two steps of a Silver pattern, and he kept it small so no one would notice.
The crowd noticed anyway.
"He's good," someone whispered. "For a scholar."
Tae-gang's eyes were on Chang-min's blade.
There was something wrong with it.
A faint glossy sheen lay along the wood, and it was not sweat, and it was not oil.
