Chapter 17: Locked Door

Ransome Property took up the thirty-first floor of the glass tower.

At four o'clock the assistant at the front desk looked at me.

"Mrs. Ransome. He's finishing a call."

"I'll wait in his office."

"He asked that no one go in."

"I'm not no one."

She smiled into her screen and said nothing at all.

His office was a long grey room with a wall of windows and a desk made from a single slab of black walnut.

Cal stood at the glass with a phone at his ear and his back to me.

He wore a charcoal turtleneck, and the line of his shoulders looked carved out of the sky behind him.

I closed the door.

I turned the lock.

It made a small, solid click that he heard from across the room.

He didn't turn around.

"I'll call you back," he said into the phone, and ended the call without waiting for an answer.

He set the phone on the sill.

"Penelope."

"It's four."

"I have a board packet to read."

"No, you don't."

He turned.

His eyes went to the lock, and to me.

Then they dropped to the yellow wrap dress I'd put on that morning with nothing under it.

"How long have you been planning this?"

"Since you tied me to your bed."

"That was last night."

"I've been very efficient."

I crossed the carpet slowly.

I stopped an arm's length from him and pulled the tie of the wrap dress and let it fall open.
