Chapter 17: Clean

Jo's POV

By Tuesday morning, eleven hundred people had seen the photo of me and Nolan on the sidewalk.

My first patient of the day was a woman in her fifties, and she had her phone out before she'd lowered the chair.

"Is this you?" she said. "My daughter belongs to that gym."

"It's me."

"Oh, honey." She said it kindly, which was worse. "He says you've been so brave."

I put a mask over my face so she couldn't see the rest of it and cleaned her teeth like a professional.

At the lunch break, the front-desk girl came into the supply room and shut the door.

"Mrs. Colfax, there are people in the waiting room asking for a different hygienist."

"Which people?"

"Three."

I breathed in, and then out.

"Then they'd better reschedule."

I took off my gloves, went down the hall to the office of the woman who owned the practice, and knocked.

She was sixty-two, with reading glasses on a chain and nine years of my paychecks signed in her hand.

She had the post open on her screen.

"Sit," she said.

"I can explain."

"I'm sure you can. I'm not asking you to." She took off her glasses. "I read all four hundred comments. I'd say about thirty are decent. The rest I'd like to bill for the cleaning."

"I'm sorry about the disruption."

"I cancelled the practice's corporate membership at Mr. Colfax's gym this morning," she said. "Then I called every patient who left a comment, and told them they could keep their appointments with you or find a new dentist."

I stared at her.

"That's your chair," she said. "It was yours before he was famous. Go back to work."
