Chapter 13: Rule Six

"Five weeks," I said.

"Yes."

"Sit down."

He sat at the long table in the dark kitchen, shirtless, with his hands flat in front of him.

I stayed standing in his shirt.

I turned on one light over the counter, so I could see his face and he could see mine.

"Start with London," I said.

"A man who works for me there handles our supplier accounts. He found payments from Kirkbride Hotels to a flat in Lakeview, a private clinic and a woman named Tabitha Crowe." Declan didn't look away. "Eleven months of them. I called Stanley's old assistant and she confirmed the rest."

"That was five weeks ago."

"I booked a flight the next morning. It took three weeks to hand off my work. I landed eight days before the gala."

"You told me you came back for the anniversary."

"That was a lie."

He said it flat, and he let it sit.

"It broke rule five before there was a rule five," he said. "I've been breaking it since the penthouse."

I put both palms on the counter, because they needed something to do.

"At the gala you knew Stanley was seeing the woman who slapped me."

"I knew he was seeing her. I didn't know she was engaged to Hayden until your toast. I didn't know the baby was his." He swallowed. "I stood at that door waiting for my brother to make a move, and I didn't know you were the move."

"You saw her leave his office yesterday morning."

"Yes."

"And you came home and said 'fine.'"

"Yes."

"And this afternoon you watched me look at Stanley's hand on her back and you said you didn't know what it meant."

"I knew what it meant."
