Chapter 41: The Lie I Almost Believed

Angelo's POV

My mother had left Noelle's first letter on the kitchen table, and I read it again before I slept.

Dead to you. Noelle had put those words in my mouth five weeks after the divorce.

I decided I would take one thing back before I asked anyone for anything.

On Saturday morning I made two calls before I left the house.

Tala listened to both from the guest bed with her tea going cold.

The first was to my bank.

"There's a check I issued on the first of April for two hundred thousand dollars," I said. "It was torn in half. I want it voided and I want the account note to say I did it."

The man on the line asked if I wanted to reissue it.

"No. I never want that check reissued."

The second call was to the airline.

I had bought my mother a seat home in the first week of April.

I'd done it before I said a word to her, with the date left open.

"Cancel it," I told the agent. "No, don't change it. Cancel it."

When I hung up, Tala was watching me over the mug.

"You didn't ask anybody if you could," she said.

"I used a check to push her out the door," I said. "Now I'm taking it back."

"Go."

"You're sure."

"Angelo. I'm lying down. Go to the prison, and say it out loud when you get back."
