Chapter 24: The Lake House

"Did he say where he was taking him?"

"He said Tito had a doctor's appointment. He had a lollipop for him." The teacher's voice was getting higher. "Tito went with him. He knows him."

"What was he driving?"

"A little blue car. An old one. I thought that was strange, for him."

My Honda.

I knew exactly where my Honda lived.

"Call the police," I said. "Tell them a child was taken by a man who isn't his parent. Tell them his name."

I hung up.

Three people were waiting at my counter. The old judge was at the end of it with the sign-in log.

"Close up for me," I said.

He looked at my face and reached for his cane.

"Go," he said.

I called Valerio.

Busy.

I called Paola.

"I'm at the house," she said. "What's wrong?"

"Whitman has Tito. Come get me. Now."

She didn't ask one question.

Six minutes later her car came up the side street the wrong way and stopped with two wheels on the curb.

I got in.

"Where?"

"Scituate. The lake house."

"How do you know?"

"Because he took my car to do it," I said. "And my car lives in that garage. And Whitman has never had an idea in his life that wasn't the easiest one."
