Chapter 18: The Bar Top
At nine on Monday morning the taproom smelled of floor polish and new kegs.
The investors stood in a half circle by the bar, four of them, with coffee in paper cups.
The wife from the quarter-zips held a tablet.
Trevor was halfway through his walk-through speech when the back door opened.
Cade came in with a cordless driver in one hand and a canvas bag of clamps on his shoulder.
I walked beside him in Jo's green cardigan, holding a folded sheet of paper.
Two bartenders in black aprons looked up from the glasses they were polishing.
Trevor stopped talking.
"Cade," he said, with a bright, awful laugh. "You're early. Everyone, this is the man who built this beautiful bar."
"Yeah," Cade said. "I did."
He set the bag on the walnut.
The investors smiled at him.
Cade put the bit to the first screw under the lip of the bar and squeezed the trigger.
